Eastern Market

Click to enlargeOn any given Saturday, some 30,000 people of all walks of life can be found shopping and browsing just down the street from the FD Lofts at Eastern Market. They are drawn to the Market, whether it’s for the farmers' stalls and retail shops, or the art galleries and restaurants, or just for the street life. They come for products and produce from as near as Michigan, Ohio, and Canadian farms, to as far away as the European, Middle Eastern, Asian and South American farming areas. They come to be part of a truly unique Urban experience.

Many urbanites and suburbanites make a day outing at Eastern Market, arriving at daybreak and having breakfast at one of the Market’s restaurants then spending the morning and afternoon shopping for fruits, vegetables, flowers, shrubs, and evergreens. Eastern Market’s selection is so huge and expansive that it is recognized as one of the largest bedding flower markets in the world. Flower Day, held on the 3rd Sunday in May, is the largest and best known Market event which attracts over 100,000 people, a genuine cosmopolitan experience at Eastern Market.

Much of the Eastern Market District was originally mixed use, i.e. residential and commercial, with shop owners maintaining their businesses on the ground floor and their residences on the second.

Generals Ulysses S. Grant, George Custer and John J. Pershing were, at various times, headquartered in the area and marched troops up and down the streets where Eastern Market is presently located. Also, parts of the Underground Railroad went under Eastern Market through to the Detroit River where escaping slaves were able to make safe haven to Canada.

Urban living at FD Lofts in Eastern Market provides an eclectic mix of culture, diversity, history, activity, and street life in a vibrant urban center and is now one of the hippest and most exciting loft addresses in all of Detroit.
